Frequently Asked Questions

The Connection Center is a community-based resource in San Antonio where certified Peer Specialists provide free support for mental health, substance use recovery, and life challenges. Whether you’re facing something big or just need someone to talk to, we’re here to listen and help.

Peer Support is emotional and practical support from someone who’s been through similar challenges. Our Peer Specialists have lived experience with recovery and are state-certified to help others. They aren’t therapists—they’re real people who understand, relate, and walk alongside you.

Yes, it’s really free. There’s no catch, no insurance required, and no diagnosis needed. Thanks to community partnerships and public funding, we can offer support at no cost to you.

We help with a wide range of needs, like:

  • When you just need someone to listen
  • When you’re feeling stuck or stressed
  • When you’re unsure how to access professional mental health or substance-use treatment
  • When you’re trying to get something done in the community, but don’t know how
  • When you feel overwhelmed by life’s challenges

Even if your situation feels complicated, we’re here to support you through it.

Most of our Peer Support happens in person, because we believe that human connection is most powerful face-to-face. That said, we understand not everyone can make it to a physical location. We sometimes offer virtual or phone-based support depending on your needs and the availability of our team—just reach out, and we’ll do our best to make it work for you.

Our typical hours are Monday through Friday, 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM. Reach out, and we’ll help you find the best time to connect with you.

That’s amazing. If you’re in recovery and want to use your experience to help others, we offer Mental Health Peer Specialist (MHPS), Recovery Support Peer Specialist (RSPS), and Supervisor (PSS) certification trainings—along with ongoing mentorship. Visit our “Get Trained” section to learn more.

Absolutely. Through our Harbor program, we place Peer Specialists at trusted community sites. We work directly with your team to design services that fit your setting—whether it’s one-on-one support, group facilitation, program navigation, or general support for your clients.

It depends on your needs. Thanks to generous philanthropic and government support, we can often provide Peer Support or training services to partner organizations at no cost. When funding isn’t available, we offer reasonable rates and flexible packages.

We offer both certification and customized training, including:

  • MHPS, RSPS, and PSS certifications
  • WRAP (Wellness Recovery Action Plan)
  • Mental Health First Aid
  • Professional development training on self-care, communication, and applying the Social Determinants of Health

We can deliver training online, at your site, or on our schedule—whatever works best for you.
